Lots of people will do anything for a whiter smile. In fact, there are whole grocery store aisles and websites dedicated to whitening products…but not all of them are worth it. Some have a lower concentration of peroxide, others contain ingredients that sound promising, but don’t have a real whitening effect. There are “natural” toothpastes that contain clay or charcoal, and trays and strips that promise whitening in a matter of minutes.

Unfortunately, the whitening products you can buy at the grocery or drug store usually only have a limited impact. The professional strength treatment Dr. Kherani can provide in our office will exceed those results with a whiter white in far less time!

When Is the Right Time to Whiten?

Any time can be the right time to bleach your teeth, but we especially recommend about 2-3 weeks before a special event, such as a wedding or formal pictures.

The initial treatment in the office will take about a half hour once the trays have been fitted. You will take the trays and gel home with you and wear them for about an hour a day. You can expect the full results in 10-14 days.

Whitening is also appropriate to have done the same amount of time before any cosmetic procedure like bonding, crowns, Invisalign, veneers, or implants. You’ll want to match your veneers or crowns to the natural color of your teeth. The color of the prosthetics won’t change the way your enamel does!

Getting Ready for Treatment

If you’re getting ready to have your teeth whitened, one of the first things you should do is have your semi-annual cleaning. You’ll get the whitest white on teeth that have been professionally cleaned and screened for decay. Set the appointment for your whitening at the end of that visit. On your way home, pick up some toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth; the whitening treatment can make them a little sensitive for a while and using the toothpaste beforehand can make the sensitivity less noticeable.

Take Care of Your Investment

Once your teeth are on their way to their whitest white, you should take care to keep them that way. Regular dental care is an absolute must: brushing, flossing, and routine cleanings at our office. Additionally, be careful of what you eat. Foods and drinks can stain your teeth, so you want to be careful about what you put into your mouth. Particular culprits for staining include dark sodas, tea, coffee and red wine. These can turn your sparkling smile to brown in no time at all.
