With the new school year upon us, it’s important to make sure that your children and their smiles are prepared to get back to the books! Here are some tooth-related things that we recommend putting on your kid’s back-to-school checklist.

1. Brainstorm Tooth-Healthy Snacks

Provide your child with nutritious snacks that will give them energy throughout the day. Here are some of our favorite tooth-healthy foods that will help your child and their teeth get the nutrients they need:

  • Nuts & Seeds
  • String Cheese
  • Apples with Nut Butter
  • Raw Carrots, Celery, Broccoli, Cauliflower & Jicama with Hummus
  • Low-Sugar Yogurt with Chopped Fresh Fruit & Low-Sugar Granola

2. Get Them Fitted for a Custom Athletic Mouthguard

Is your young athlete joining a sports team this year or does their current mouthguard not quite fit anymore? A custom-fitted mouthguard will provide optimal protection during physical activity that may involve contact with equipment, the ground, or other participants. Moreover, since a well-fitted custom mouthguard is designed for maximum comfort, your child will be more inclined to wear it than ill-fitting alternatives. Sports are known to cause the highest amount of dental-related injuries, so contact our office for more information about getting a mouthguard for your child to reduce the likelihood of dental trauma.

3. Have Your Child Choose Their Own Water Bottle

While water plays a key role in a child’s oral and overall health, actually getting kids to drink enough water can be tough. We find that kids are more likely to stay hydrated when they pick out a fun water bottle to carry around at school. Having a refillable water bottle with them at all times means they don’t need to rush to the water fountain during a passing period or ask permission to leave during class. And seeing their water bottle reminds them to take regular sips throughout the day, even before they feel thirsty.

4. Schedule Their Biannual Cleaning & Exam

We recommend that patients of all ages, including kids, visit Kherani Dental at Aspen twice a year. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, our office is open until 7:00 PM so your kiddos won’t even have to miss class.
