A poor diet can lead to many oral health problems, such as gum disease and tooth decay. Foods high in carbohydrates and sugar greatly increase the production of plaque acids that attack healthy tooth enamel. As these acids break down enamel over time, cavities begin to form. Though almost all foods contain some type of sugar, you can make responsible choices to help control the amount of sugar you consume. Here are five foods that promote healthy teeth!

1. Cheese

Do you love cheese? Well, you’re in luck. Studies have found that eating cheese raises the pH levels in your mouth, while lowering the risk of tooth decay. Cheese provides a great source of calcium and protein, both nutrients that help to strengthen your enamel. Plus, the increased chewing required to eat cheese increases saliva, which helps promote a healthier mouth and reduce cavities.

2. Carrots

Tasty, crunchy, and full of nutritious fiber, carrots greatly reduce your risk of cavities by increasing saliva production in your mouth. They’re also known as a great source of vitamin A, an important piece of a healthy, balanced diet.

3. Yogurt

Yogurt is rich in calcium and protein, but also has the added benefit of probiotics. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria for your gums, as they essentially “crowd out” bacteria that leads to cavities. Eating plain yogurt with no added sugar can significantly benefit your teeth and gums!

4. Almonds

Almonds provide both calcium and protein to help strengthen your enamel. And, they’re low in sugar which helps to reduce the production of plaque acids over time. If you choose the salted variety, stay clear of juice and soda, and instead wash it down with some water to enjoy a brighter, healthier smile.

5. Greens

Leafy greens like kale, spinach, and broccoli are full of vitamins and minerals that promote oral health. High in enamel-building calcium, they also contain folic acid, a kind of B vitamin that’s shown to be beneficial for treating gingivitis.
